Black and white photographs captured inside the catacombs of Capucins convent and taken during a long trip to Palermo, Sicily by Jesse Fernandez. While some of the dead are laid down in glass cabinets, others have been arranged and staged in poses, held up, sitting down, isolated or in groups. This book documents the extraordinary and fascinating mummification, which conserved the attitudes, expressions, and clothing of an entire society over centuries, from the most humble to the noblest of this city’s dwellers.
