COUM’s ‘Cease to Exist’ performances, led by Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti, showcased their bold stage-art investigations. Part 4 at LAICA was a ritualistic purification featuring provocative elements such as bloodletting, bodily functions, and primitive body decoration. This intense performance pushed boundaries, with some audience members leaving, their exits recorded as part of the event’s commentary on reactions to art.
In contrast, Part 5 at I.D.E.A. offered a serene conclusion, with the same props used previously—twigs, syringes, mirrors—gently organised and packed away. The performance closed with Genesis and Cosey dressing, facing each other silently, and sharing a kiss before exiting. Acknowledging the challenge of presenting their full vision to all audiences, they plan to use film to extend access to their evocative and boundary-defying work, which aims to make art both startling and inclusive.
