Born in Lisbon in 1934 and the daughter of sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, Helena Almeida finished her degree in Painting at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes in Lisbon in 1955 at the age of 21. With a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, she did part of her studies in Paris, where she began her career in abstract art. From the 1960s onwards, she stood out for her multifaceted work, mainly involving photography, becoming a well-known figure in the contemporary Portuguese art scene and one of the most important of the last century.
