Poster produced by German artist Martin Kippenberger on the occasion of ‘Jazz in Flammen’, a one-off live jazz performance by Rüdiger Carl & Sven-Åke Johansson that marked the transition from an exhibition by Albert Oehlen to that of Kippenberger’s own exhibition at Galerie Juana de Aizpuru, Madrid in 1989. The design uses a poster by José Bardasano called ‘Niños hoy, hombres del mañana’ (‘Children Today, Men of Tomorrow’), made for the Unified Socialist Youth (JSU), as a background.
From 1986 Kippenberger began to group his posters into folios, though these were united more by date than by similarity of style or function. This work forms part of the fourth of Kippenberger’s five folios, ‘Courage to Print’. Published in 1990 and limited to twenty-five editions, each folio contained twenty-eight posters made between 1988 and 1990. Visible on p.114 of the publication ‘Martin Kippenberger: Die gesamten Plakate 1977-1997’ edited by Bice Curiger.
