Nora Turato’s books lie at the core of her entire artistic process, which includes creating a book, producing material works (wall paintings, posters, sculptures, etc.), performing texts drawn from the book, and ultimately recording the video.
Turato gathers words and phrases from a wide range of sources: the internet, media headlines, advertisements, conversations, books, commercial products, as well as her own thoughts. Her Pool #1, #2, and #3 compile and arrange these fragments into an ever-expanding script that she memorizes and performs, shifting rhythm and intonation, voice and mode. In her virtuosic performances, speech, graphic form, and the book intertwine to explore the possibilities of language in a culture oversaturated with information. The accompanying publication—present throughout the artist’s development—simultaneously acts as a prop, a set piece, an exhibition, an archive, and an artist’s book.
