Michael Asher’s project was prompted by an invitation from Jean-Louis Maubant in 1982. During a trip to Lyon, he noticed that the renovation of the Croix-Rousse district was leading to numerous problems of rehousing.
His work took many forms, including a meticulous investigation into the history of the iron and steel industry in the Rhône-Alpes region, the recovery of cast iron from the boilers of the Nouveau Musée under construction and their transformation into a kind of paving stone, and the publication of the book.
