This important catalogue was published on the occasion of the third installment of a major retrospective exhibition (February 5 – March 27, 1993, Villa Arson) dedicated to the American artist Sturtevant, whose first and second parts were held at the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart and the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, respectively. With its rich iconography, dense theoretical texts, and an interview with the artist, the catalogue offers a detailed look at Sturtevant’s career and provides insight into the unique approach of this pioneer of the appropriation movement since the mid-1960s. Long overlooked, often misunderstood, her tireless work reproducing the standards of contemporary art is punctuated here by statements that open a new space for reflection on the autonomy and the present condition of the artwork.
